Individual Development Plan (IDP) concepts
Development objectives
What is a development objective?
The development objective is what a person intends to accomplish, perform or obtain in the professional career.
It guides the actions to shape the best path for the IDP and must be a common good between the worker and the manager.
Who is responsible for defining the development objectives?
The development objectives may be defined by the worker, the manager or the mentor.
When are the development objectives defined?
- At the beginning or during the IDP process
- During the self-evaluation/consensus focus evaluation (if allowed by the organization)
- From the career objectives
Note
When the development objective is defined by the consensus focus and the evaluator is changed, the new evaluator becomes responsible for the IDP.
What is the IDP mentoring process and how does it occur?
The mentor is the person indicated to accompany the process as a tutor or godfather.
Differently from the manager, this person is indicated by the HR department or the manager himself/herself as the one responsible for defining development actions and objectives and registering the IDP monitoring, during a parameterized time period.
Development actions
What are development actions?
The actions are the steps that will take you towards your desired objective.
They are the strategies which will contribute positively on the path to be taken and they may be registered by the worker, the manager or the mentor, in the beginning or during the IDP process.
Who is responsible for defining the development actions?
The development actions may be defined by the company's HR professional, the manager, the mentor of the worker himself/herself.
They are defined upon registering a development objective, during the period on which this objective is in progress, or associated with the worker's competences.
